ObjectiveIn recent years, there has been a rapid increase in studies on the use of artificial intelligence in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of dental intern students regarding the use of artificial intelligence in oral and maxillofacial surgery.Material and MethodsA 37-question survey was designed by the researchers to measure the participants' knowledge, opinions and attitudes about the use of artificial intelligence in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The surveys were administered face to face to intern students at a university's faculty of dentistry.ResultsA total of 144 students (88 female, 56 male; mean age 23.02±0.89 years) responded to the survey with a response rate of 97.29%. 29.6 of the students said they had basic knowledge about artificial intelligence technologies, and 58.5% were aware of the use of artificial intelligence in oral and maxillofacial surgery. They stated that they mostly obtain information about artificial intelligence through social media, media and web browsing, respectively. Students showed a positive attitude, expressing that they thought artificial intelligence would improve oral and maxillofacial surgery. Only 38.2% of the students were concerned that artificial intelligence would replace maxillofacial surgeons in the future. 94.6% of the students stated that they wanted to receive training on artificial intelligence applications, and 99.3% stated that they wanted to use artificial intelligence in oral and maxillofacial practices.ConclusionAlthough students do not have sufficient knowledge about artificial intelligence applications, they seem eager to learn and use artificial intelligence in their applications. In order for future dentists to be knowledgeable and prepared about artificial intelligence, pre- and post-graduation training opportunities should be provided.
