Pediatric nutritional risk screening using strongkids in patients aged 5-17 years admitted at hospital infantil doctor Robert Reid Cabral, february-april 2021
Rationale: In hospitalized pediatric patients, malnutrition is associated with many physiological problems and complications, it is the result of the complex interaction between disease and nutritional status, which generates important clinical and economic consequences. The incidence of pediatric hospital malnutrition is between 6-31% in different published articles. To prevent hospital malnutrition, nutritional risk screening is recommended to plan timely nutritional intervention. This project identifies the level of nutritional risk, presence of weight loss, and complications in patients aged 5-18 years admitted to the Hospital Pediatrico Dr. Robert Reid Cabral during the period February-April 2021 Methods: A descriptive, longitudinal study was carried out. Screening Tool for Risk on Nutritional Status and Growth (STRONGkids) was applied within 24-48 hours of admission. The nutritional status was determined with weight and height using World Health Organization (WHO) Growth Reference. To appreciate the change in weight, it was repeated in 7 days of the first measurement. Results: The predominant nutritional risk was medium with 52%, 40% had low risk and 8% high risk. 45% of the patients were eutrophic, 7% chronic malnutrition, 18% acute malnutrition and 5% chronic acute malnutrition, 17% overweight and 8% obesity. The nutritional risk that presented the most complications was medium with 10%. The high risk was the one that had the highest percentage of weight loss with 93%, the medium risk 79% had loss of and the low risk 64% had weight loss. Image: Conclusion: The greater the nutritional risk due to Strongkids, the greater the weight loss, so it is important to monitor the weight of patients and avoid nutritional deterioration during the hospital stay.
