In 2008, John Rajchman contributed an essay for a remarkable publication and exhibition introducing and exploring the history of musical and choreographic notion, entitled Notation: Kalkül und Form in den Künsten, shown in Berlin and in Karlsruhe. For a long time available only in German, the essay appears here for the first time in English, accompanied by a preface which describes the transformed context in which today it acquires new relevance in relation to performance research and the role of diagrams and the diagrammatic in it.
