Augustine's life is determined by the search for truth, which, from a very early age, leads him to approach Scripture. However, his approach to the sacred text is not easy, mainly because its proper understanding is not a simple task, neither for the young rhetor who searches the Bible for the beauty of classical texts nor for the priest whose knowledge of life and Christian wisdom is not enough to address the difficulties of the biblical text; nor for the bishop who must find the appropriate way to transmit the word of God to his congregation. In this paper, we investigate Augustine's itinerary to understand how an African rhetor from the 4th century, educated in the tradition of classical knowledge, becomes a reader, interpreter, and preacher of Scripture.
