Taking into account the extensive migratory movements in the world and the emergence and continuous study of heritage language communities, the purpose of this project is to propose an instrument for the teachers of Spanish as a Second Language for the characterization of Spanish Heritage Language Speakers in the classroom, condering the conceptualizations resulting from several studies done so far. These allowed us to establish dimensions that are part of the elements that describe Spanish Heritage Language Speakers, and to place them in a diagnostic instrument. As part of this research, 8 Spanish as a Second Language teachers who have Spanish Heritage Language Speakers in their classes, of which 5 are in Colombia and are online teachers, and 3 are abroad, in France, Italy and Australia respectively, reviewed and commented on their experience with the instrument. The teachers' responses were grouped in the same dimensions of the instrument, to validate its relevance under the conceptual considerations used for its design. In view of the findings of this research, it was possible to establish the need to have characterization instruments that allow us to identify the characteristics and particularities of Spanish Heritage Language Speakers, therefore offering the possibility of reclaiming Spanish Heritage Language’s position in Spanish as a Second Language classrooms.
