This article studies Xul Solar’s contribution to the Revista multicolor de los sábados and outlines the terms under which it took place, specifically in the context of his translation of a selection of stories by Rudyard Kipling, Just So Stories. Our analysis is grounded in the discussion of material objects—a copy of Kipling’s book and some loose pages of the magazine preserved by the artist—which allowed us to reconstruct the context in which these translations were produced at the time of their publication. Although an illustrated weekly supplement was a collective endeavor, we have found it possible to pinpoint the actions and interventions of one of its directors, Jorge Luis Borges, which account for the particular way in which the stories traveled from the book to the weekly, and for some particular choices.
