Patients who present to psychosocial oncology clinicians for cancer care management may suffer from a past history of psychiatric disorders, including trauma.Caring for these patients highlights the need for effective communication and cross-disciplinary collaborations in care coordination.This symposium will feature three speakers who have intricately collaborated in the clinical care of a patient with cancer and complex trauma in various clinical settings.Sheila Lahijani will present a brief overview of post traumatic stress and cancer and briefly introduce the case.Nicole Barr will then present the initial medical psychiatric presentation of the patient to the cancer center and diagnostic dilemmas.Laurie Ostacher will discuss the psychological themes presented in the psychosocial oncology setting and describe the therapeutic interventions that were administered.Sheila Lahijani will focus on the approach to the diagnosis of complex trauma in this patient in the emergency department.The symposium will also focus on the experience and outcomes discussing this case as part of a professional development and debriefing program at our institution.The symposium will conclude with a discussion about the themes of existential threats, race, cultural humility, and the role of psychosocial oncology as a conduit to facilitate mental health care.
