Transformation of conventional distribution systems towards active distribution networks (ADNs) and microgrids (MGs) is pursued by private and public entities in many countries, as new necessities regarding energy transition have risen. This transformation has to be done gradually while being economically responsible; therefore, this paper establishes a methodology for evaluating and searching for opportunities to develop new MG/ADN protection schemes in contrast with requirements from the specialized literature. Then, the Colombian context is presented as a study case. This work contributes to setting a clear panorama for researchers; future developments in ADN protection can be adjusted to Colombian utility requirements, especially in the short and medium term.
