This paper presents an innovative in-depth investigation of the origin of the multi attribute vehicle routing problems (MAVRPs) and the current state in literature. The investigation includes description of the attributes, solving methods and current results. Four attributes are prioritized: periodicity, multiple depots, heterogeneous fleet and time windows but other widely used attributes are referenced. A brief introduction on how the MAVRPs are solved (exactly and approximately) is included.
