This document proposes an adaptive overcurrent function for active distribution networks (ADN), where protection has several issues. Some of these issues are related to the high fault and load currents variations, considering the possible ADN operating conditions (OCs). These problems are faced in this paper considering adaptive protection. The proposed protection approach uses fast calculations and local measurements; then, a low computational burden is required to update the relay parameters for each OC without using communication infrastructure. The results obtained in the IEEE 34-nodes test feeder demonstrate the advantages of the proposed approach, which maintains adequate primary and backup protection performance at the different proposed test system OCs. Finally, this approach is suitable for implementation in the currently available digital relays for immediate use in ADN protection.
