Ecotourism is related to socio-environmental sustainability. However, the literature lacks clarification on the determinants for participation prior to the community involvement in the ecotourism. The aim of this paper is to contribute to this field of research by analyzing community-based ecosystem management through ecotourism participation. This research followed a three-steps path: (1) identify socioeconomic characteristics of the community; (2) identify social perceptions on the environment and ecotourism (3) identify social preferences regarding the participation in ecotourism and the benefits they prefer for participating. Although locals identify environmental pollution, their perceptions on ecotourism in the area is positive. Most people are willing to participate in ecotourism as a community-based strategy. Therefore, it is necessary to involve local community perceptions and understand factors influencing their participation, to achieve local empowerment and to support the decision makers.
