Background: This work addresses the question of role of BMI in patient with diabetes, setting out the basis for a complete analysis of the patients from a region that was between the top 5 states in Colombia with the highest prevalence and mortality rate of diabetes in both genders in the last years. The aim is to report the profile of the ambulatory patient of a hospital Colombian, taking into account body mass index (BMI), laboratory tests and medical complications in a time span of 5 years. Methods: Database with 5,111 patients with diabetes treated at the hospital between 2010 and 2015. Variables analyzed according to gender, age or BMI. Information on patients was extracted from electronic medical records. Findings: Inadequate control of HbA1c, glycemia and high BMI were common in this patients; going from overweight to obesity is more likely in patients older than 38 years old (both genders). Interpretation: Analysis of this database is important and could be used to formulate guidelines and recommendations to reduce the BMI and complications due to overweight and obesity in patients with diabetes.
