Based on the applanation phenomena produced by hard contact lenses on irregular corneas, a refractive surgical procedure was developed using human lamellar corneal tissue and was named epikeratoplasty. The surgical results obtained in several keratoconus patients were excellent in the correction of large refractive errors. However, the visual results were not satisfactory because in all cases the applanation produced keratoconus posticus that significantly altered the corneal optics.
