Background.Antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) is a key strategy to optimize antibiotic use.The aim of this study is to evaluate Epi Info ® use as a practical tool to facilitate a prospective evaluation and characterization of antibiotic prescription at a Pediatric Hospital in Bogotá.Methods.Using Epi Info® a form was designed to allow daily recollection and analysis of different elements of Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.A prospective audit on infants on broad-spectrum antibiotics was conducted from June 1, 2017 through December 31, 2017 by the ID specialist.Results.A total of 321 patients were included. One hundred five (32.7%) antibiotics were prescribed in pediatric wards, 86 (26.8%) in oncology, 70 (21.8%) in the emergency department, and 60 (18.7%) in PICU.The most frequent diagnosis was the category "others" [55 (20.8%)] in which febrile neutropenia is included, gastrointestinal 50 (15.6%),respiratory infections 44 (13.7%), and fever without source 25 (7.7%).Two hundred forty-eight (77.2%) patients had only 1 antibiotic, 57 (17.8%) patients had 2 antibiotics, and 16 (5%) patients had 3 antibiotics. The most prescribed antibiotics were ceftriaxone 155 (38.4%), cefepime 85 (21.1%), vancomycin 46 (11.4%), and piperacillin-tazobactam 29 (7.2%).In 88 (22.9%) cases, the prescription was not appropriate; with ceftriaxone prescribed in 55 (53.4%) of these cases.Imprecise diagnosis was considered the reason of inappropriate antibiotic in 28 (33.7%)cases and inadequate adherence to local recommendations in 21 (25.3%).The dose was adequate in 364 (91.4%) prescriptions. The infectious service did not modify the antibiotic in 264 (71.1%) cases, modified it in 48 (12.9), and stopped it in 37 (9.9%).Conclusions.Epi Info ® facilitated the recollection and analysis of antimicrobial prescription patterns at our institution and allowed us to characterize and in daily basis audit antibiotics prescriptions. This will be the start point for future impact analysis of this strategy.
