Sex trafficking is one of the exploitations given within the transnational crime of human trafficking. Human trafficking is a movement of persons across nation‐state borders or regions by means of fraud or force for the purpose of slavery, sexual exploitation, servitude, or forced labor. Sex trafficking remains a sensitive topic, and the scale of the problem is still debated since victims of sex trafficking are hidden within different forms of sexual services: prostitution, pornography, and/or domestic service. The dispersion of the victims across different sectors of sexual services makes it difficult to gather accurate statistics regarding this crime. Therefore, some activists condemn unequivocally prostitution and pornography, arguing that the sex industry stimulates human trafficking and therefore it should be eliminated in its entirety. The conflation of sex trafficking and prostitution has simplified a complex phenomenon that demands an analysis of sociopolitical conditions that prompt immigration, and how the victims become vulnerable to this crime.
