HIGHLIGHTS Small preservation areas are very important to preserve macrofungi biodiversity. The Madre Monte Preservation reserve in the Colombian Andes has contributed to preserve at last 3 rare species, 19 new citations to the Andes and 2 new to the country. Change the strategy creating small preservation areas instead of large ones could be an important step in preserving macrofungi.
