The objetive of the dissertation is to characterize the trajectory of the UNICAMP interdisciplinary research centers and nuclei beteween 1982 and 1994.In the first part, the antecedentes of this trajetory are taken up, underlining the interdisciplinary structures in the Brazilian higher education modernization process; the development of the scientific interdisciplinarity tendency after the Second World War; and the personality role ofZeferino Va:z, UNICAMP rector since 1966 to 1977.In the second part, the process of the creation of the nuclei in may 1982 is presented. This process is explained by the institutional crisis context, at the start of the decade of the 80's, by the political changes in the country, as consequence of the transition from the military to the democratic regimes, and the activities of the UNICAMP discussion groups existing at that time: the Science and Technology Policy Group which belonged to the Tecnology Development Company and the group studing Public Policy in the Inatitute of Philosophy and Humans Sciences. In the third part, the three phases of trajetory of nuclei and centers, until 1994, are analysed: exparimentation, pre-inatitutionalization, and inatitutionalization and evaluation. In the conclusions the following elements are highlighted: a) The trajetory of the <liferent structures was heterogenous due to diverse situations observed -extintion, separation, transformation, closure and success; b) Without demeriting the efforts made and the results obtained, the highet management university levels seemed not to be coherent with the main objetive that inspired the creation of the nuclei: "the multidisciplinary practice of studies and research can serve as an instrument for theoretical and practical redefinition of the University role and its true configuration" -which appeared in the governnental decree GR 25 of may 27"', 1982; c) It is still necessary the transformation ofUNICAMP into an interdiscpilinary inatitution, in order to better accomplish its compromises with society.v.
