Neurotropism is one of the common characteristics described for some types of pathogenic coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV (2002) and MERS-CoV (2012). Endothelium, glial cells, and neurons have reported receptor expression for angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), making them a potential target for SARS-CoV-2.
