This document establishes an alternative to mitigate the environmental impact produced by an open-pit mine on water resources. The case study is El Santuario Mine, in the municipality of Ubalá, Cundinamarca. The reports published by the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Guavio (CORPOGUAVIO) were used as a source of information, particularly to know the water quality of the surrounding rivers and streams of El Santuario Mine. A normative and a statistical analysis were carried out, with the aim to find the impact that the mine has on the water resource. Considering this information, the parameters that were out of the limits established by the Colombian regulations were identified. Finally, different water treatment alternatives were proposed for the mine based on studies done throughout the world.
