In the ethanol and sugar industry, one of the most important parameters to control is the pH of the sugarcane juice because it determines the efficiency throughout the process. However, the pH is one of the most difficult variables to control, because it is a nonlinear system with multiple disturbances. This paper proposes successful control strategies for the alkalized juice system. In particular, a cascade control with feedforward and feedback configuration to control pH and a function of level versus pump speed to minimize disturbances associated with input juice flow rate. A preliminary process characterization is obtained with the Ziegler-Nichols method, which validates the long system dead time. In this way, the system is modified to change its dynamics. The proposed strategies are implemented in one of the main plant producers of ethanol in Colombia. The qualitative and quantitative results show the effectiveness of the control strategies in a comparative study of three cases.
