Sympathetic magic is an analytical category established by James Frazer in The Golden Bough that is expressed in two aspects: Homeopathic magic and contagious magic. The following essay provides examples regarding the belief in the magical link between representation and that which is represented, particularly in the use of anthropomorphic figures. In order to achieve this objective, we analyze six eighteenth-century inquisitorial files that were produced in the Bishopric of Michoacan (Mexico).
