Effect of the injection and measurement patterns and the geometric distribution of electrodes in bladder volume estimation using electrical impedance tomography
The loss of micturion sensation due to spinal cord or brain injuries leads to a high risk of urinary tract infection. There is little experimental work on the use of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) to estimate the volume of the human bladder, which would help patients in the control of voiding. The present study shows through simulation in EIDORS (Electrical Impedance and Diffuse Optical Tomography Reconstruction Software) that single ring configurations of electrodes with adjacent injection and measurement patterns (RN ad-ad) is the best option for bladder volume estimation. Subsequently, this configuration and an 8-electrode EIT prototype are used to estimate the volume of three physical steel spheres of different radii immersed in a saline tank. In addition, the RN ad-ad configuration showed lowest sensitivity to measurement Gaussian white noise. From the test with the saline tank, we conclude that RN ad-ad with 8 electrodes is a promising configuration for estimating bladder volume.
