The science of psychology in Taiwan, the Republic of China is in the bud.Psychological activities in Taiwan date from 1949 with the setting up of the Department of Psychology at National Taiwan University. There were more than four thousand volumes of books, one hundred and fifty volumes of magazines on psychology and about one hundred and fifty itemS of experimental instruments in the Department of Philosophy. In the summer of 1949, I was elected as Professor of Psychology, taking the responsibility of breaking psychology away from the Department of Philosophy by setting it up as an independent department in the College of Science. The plan was soon approved by the Ministry of Education of the Central Government.Students were recruited. The four-year courses have been divided into required and elective ones in a way quite similar to the American system.I have been head of the Department ever since then. For one decade of our continuous effort, we have now a two storied building, into which we moved this summer. We also have animal rooms, where monkeys, rats, guinea pigs etc. are raised. Now there are five full-time professors, one lecturer and four assistants in the Department.Books and magazines have been increased seven thousand volumes and instruments to 180 items. There have already been seven classes of graduates.
