In 1519 Hernan Cortes and his approximately 600 soldiers came to what is today called Mexico and set off on an undertaking that was at once a conquest (of the indigenous Mesoamerican peoples), a discovery (of new civilizations for both the Europeans and the indigenous populations), and eventually, the creation of a new ethnic group and a new, hybrid culture that is, the mestizo nation of Mexico. The Lienzo de Tlaxcala, a detailed pictorial narrative of the support of the Tlaxcalans in the Spanish defeat of the Aztecs, was created in the second half of the sixteenth century. La Malinche continues to inspire writers in Latin America, but particularly in Mexico and the Chica (Chicana) world. Laura Esquivel, well known for Como agua para chocolate published another novel with the title Malinche, although the main character is called Malinalli within the text.
