Research projects must have a critical and selective appropriation in the handling of information, according to its purpose; however, its shortage frequently affects the decision-making process in the planning and execution of these. This article focuses on the handling of information in a case study related to the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the conditions of the tertiary road network of Guayabetal -Colombia. Mentioned this, three phases are reported that compile the execution of the pilot case, dealing with information management as the basis of its execution. Initially, a phase of gathering information acquired from the repository of national entities was considered. Subsequently, the phase of data collection in the field was carried out with the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) tools, with the purpose of contrasting the information obtained from databases, literature and other sources of information, with that taken in the field. In the third phase, the processing of data that guarantees the usefulness of the information was contemplated when being validated by content and geolocation for the generation of a database available for its use. This system was created in order to generate guidelines that allow the collection, validation and organization of information to structure a reliable data base available to interpretive and analytical procedures that will provide decision support tools for interventions of the tertiary road network.
