Introduction: the carretilleros are a special class of workers responsible for the collection, transportation and disposal of waste, participating in the waste collection and classification process, with great socio-economic and environmental contributions to society. Objective: The objective of this study is to describe the clinical and social aspects related to the type and condition of the work performed by animals. Methods: 61 horses were included in this study. Each owner conducted a survey containing the identification and characterization of the animals, the condition of the saddle, the work utensils, food handling and the medical history of the animals. The responses were evaluated by frequency distribution. Results: According to the owners' responses, 76.6% (36/47) of the chairs were in good condition, 21.28% (10/47) in fair condition, and only 2.13% (1/47) in poor condition; Fourteen forklifts did not answer this question. Most owners reported using it as long as possible and sometimes pieces of foam, scraps of fabric, rugs, or blankets, especially when there was no erosion of the lower chair protection, known as sweating. In some cases, cables are used to maintain this protection, leading to injuries to the animal's skin. Conclusion: The educational level of traction animal owners has a great influence on the raising of these animals and their consequences. Future studies on the biomechanics of the draw will be of great importance for the empirical correction of the procedures to which these animals are subjected. More studies are needed to quantify the influence of the environment on injuries in this type of horse.
