Summary: Objective. The present investigation was focused on understanding the construction of social representations about the physical punishment used in the upbringing from the stories of a group of Colombian mothers and their adolescent children. Methodology. The methodological approach used was qualitative, a non-probability sampling was carried out to select the 20 participating dyads (mother and son) for convenience; a family characterization sheet was used; Additionally, a semi-structured interview directed at mothers and another directed at adolescents were applied. Results and conclusion. The study found that most participants associate physical punishment with hitting, describe anger and sadness as emotional triggers for its use, and refer to the mother as the main punisher. In general, a high degree of acceptance towards the implementation of punishment is perceived, and this reflects the validity and possible perpetuation of this practice in upbringing.
