This article is a reflection on the value of clothing items as a record of memories. Therefore, this work explores the relationships between memory, garment and fashion to highlight the importance of clothing and fashion in the construction of the historical memory of a nation and/or its social history. For this purpose, we reviewed a series of national and international research studies and art exhibitions around garments protected in museum collections which are connected with historical personalities or prominent designers in the history of fashion. Then, we address the need to preserve copies of everyday life clothing in this type of collections. Afterwards, we review collection policies in Colombia and its relationship with the national sartorial heritage, which reveals the need for a fashion and clothing museum in our country in order to keep Colombian sartorial memory alive.
