Over the last few years, new technologies have appeared that have been applied in the industry, health, education and organizations in general, which has influenced the level of competitiveness between large corporations and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This phenomenon is forcing traditional organizations to become intelligent organizations to remain in the market, since otherwise they tend to disappear. That way the virtual organizations (VOs) arise, which are dynamic temporary alliances of independent organizations, which are willing to collaborate to achieve common goals and can be geographically dispersed. Current VO investigations do not consider new technologies, especially those considered as part of the fourth industrial revolution called "Industry 4.0", because of that a new characterization for a fourth generation (VO4.0) is necessary, through a systematic review of the literature (SRL). This document characterizes a virtual fourth generation organization (VO4.0) in which five key factors were identified to classify the characteristics found.
