The green revolution has resulted in many new opportunities and challenges for the chemical industry. Specifically, there is an increasing tendency for using natural ingredients in product formulation, and, as a result, an increase in the complexity of product formulation. A way to address this is through a multiscale strategy that allows for deeper insights into small to large scale phenomena that affect product physical properties of interest. In this article, the authors have provided an abbreviated review of computational and experimental methods currently used to formulate emulsions involving bio-based ingredients, giving special emphasis to the use of biosurfactants. This combination of in silico and in vitro strategies for emulsion design fits within the multiscale paradigm.
