The Program Care of Elderly Prisoners in Colombia (Atención al adulto mayor privado de la libertad en Colombia) was established based on the results of a study conducted in 2014 with the participation of women and men in ten prisons. This study provided the perspectives of older adults regarding their experiences and living conditions while incarcerated in Colombian prisons. Using the results of the study, five specific areas for intervention were identified: life expectancy, psychological implications, implications for prisoners' families, the identification of illegal behaviors, and the prevention of recidivism. These focus areas are discussed theoughout the text with respect to their conceptual and methodological implications and in terms of the application of practices designed to address them constructively. The aim of the program is to provide the individual and group services that older prisoners especially need in order to improve their living conditions during their time in confinement, and that differentiate them from the general prison population. This work should be of interest to professionals in various fields with an interest in community work with prisoners and older adults, to employees of the Colombian National System of Jails and Penitentiaries (Sistema Nacional Penitenciario y Carcelario Colombiano –SNPC) and to policy makers in the area of services provided to the target population.
