Beans (Phaseolus vu l g a ris , LINNAEUS, 1753) pest rnanagernent through soil background associated with varietal resistanceAn experiment to study the background s oil e ffects associated with varietal res istance in bean s (Phas eolus vulgaris, LINNAEUS, 1753) pest populations, vírus incidence and yield was carried out a t CI AT "Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical , Palmira , Colombi a " from January t o March, 1978.The effect of the treatments and o f the varie ties to Empoasea kraeme:ri (ROSS & MOORE, 1957) popul ation of nimphs and adults was positive. The variety x treatment inte ration was only sigui ficative t o nimphs population,;.The treatment with aluminium foil was the most effective for the varie ties 'P 14 ' and ' Diacol -Calima '.Cons idering the larva 1 p lan t damage and Crysomel i dae popula tions it was observed that the background soil with rice mulching causes an attracvity to insects.A vírus complex was pre sent, and it wa s not possible to evaluate clearly the effects of the treatments , on this respect. The yielding of the varie thy ' Diacol -Calima' was superior with the aluminium background and rice mul ching .The se treatments yield 2.3 and 1.3 times more than the control, respectively. The variety ' p 14 ' showed a maj or tole rance diseases. t o pes t andA signidicative influence of the nimphs and adules of meri and of the vírus incidence on the yi e lds were indicated correlation analysis.Adults of Chrysomelidae did not a f fect significant ly.
