Abstract The reaction of the diazomalonate (II) with the pyran derivative (I) in hot fluorobenzene leading to the pyran (III) and to the rearrangement products (IV) and (V) is strongly influenced by the nature of the transition metal catalyst used, as it is exemplified in the scheme.
