Abstract The Universities in Latinoamerica have the potential to contribute to the economic, social and environmental transformation of the rural communities in order to build a present more sustainable and resilience. The Regional Innovation Cluster is a Colombian social entrepreneurship that had developed a collective action model where rural communities needs are transformed into challenging question for engineering classroom projects, or other disciplines, where the main objective is the collective co-creation of solutions. Along the semester the students face the implications of its profession in a rural context. The objective of the model is to generate a collective movement where professors and students have an important role in the development of the communities that surround them. This paper presents the impacts results of the Cluster that nowadays have the participation of more than 600 students from the most important universities in Bogotá and Cartagena. During its two years of implementation have developed solutions related to quinoa producers, rural tourism initiatives, recycling, sustainable fishing and others. One of the main findings is the important of the challenge based learning model implementation in order to align students, professors and communities expectation. Also, the need for implement strategies to deal with the communicational gaps between professionals and rural communities.
