This article presents a proposal regarding the criteria and the form of election of High Courts magistrates in Colombia. Its purpose is to contribute to the solution of the problem of corruption in the administration of justice in Colombia, which has as one of its main causes the lack of independence and transparency when electing judges for the highest levels of judgeship. With the current election system, there is a risk of biasing the appointment due to political, economic, ideological or social factors of the aspirants. The research that originated was made using the hermeneutic-semiotic and axiological methods. As a result, the merit expressed regarding the ability for prudential reasoning on behalf of the candidate and as a way to ensure independence and transparency is proposed as the election criterion.
