Youth from the depressed sectors of Medellín have naturalized urban violence. Their experiences in areas of conflict, coupled with social representations and depictions in the media, have shaped this image. In Medellin’s poor neighborhoods, schools have been hampered in implementing their educational programs. Under these conditions, young people have two options: to resist the problem of violence, or continue to immerse themselves in the cycle of aggression. The study of social representations unveils the processes of how urban violence becomes a way of life for students. A formal investigation into this problem would facilitate the creation of an educational program that could cope, accommodate, and form a tailored plan to help future students.
