The single-port technique for prostate surgery has been established with different approaches: extraperitoneal, transperitoneal, and transvesical, initially described for laparoscopy and then robot-assisted laparoscopy. Improvements in single-port techniques for prostate surgery have focused on new instruments, and optical devices, trocars, and retraction mechanisms have been developed. The advantages and disadvantages of using a single port for prostate surgery are controversial. Some claim that it is a nontrustable approach because of the low case numbers and technical difficulties, whereas others state that despite these factors some advantages have been shown and that previously described difficulties are being overcome, proving that this is a novel proposal for the da Vinci SP robotics platform, integrating the system into the "Y" principle.
