On the search for small-scale procedures for the valorization of spent Ni-MH batteries, a combined hydrometallurgical and electrometallurgical facile procedure is presented in this paper. The hydrometallurgical step consists in the leaching of the active electrode materials of the batteries in HCl 4M at room temperature and under stirring. This procedure granted a recovery of 94.32 % for Ni and 72.44 % for Co in the leachate. This solution was then electrolyzed using a current of -1.0 A.cm-2 and a potential of -800 mV vs Ag/AgCl approximately, generating a Ni-Co rich deposit on a pure copper electrode surface. The obtained coating had no content of rare earths metals and showed a full coverage of the surface but exhibiting, in the same time, voids and microcracks related to the hydrogen reaction found during the deposition. The main constituents of the deposit were Ni (50.05 Wt.%) and Co (22.85 Wt.%). These results suggest that spent Ni-MH batteries can be successfully considered as a secondary raw material to be used in electroplating processes.
