High efficiency concentrating photovoltaics (CPV) can reduce the cost of photovoltaic power in a market dominated by balance of system and soft costs. Planar microtracking aims to provide a CPV solution for rooftops by laterally tracking a dense array of solar cells within a concentrator module having the form factor of standard PV panels. Here, we demonstrate a small-scale proof-of-concept system that reaches 30% power conversion efficiency at over 600× concentration, resulting in 54% more energy generated per unit area than a commercial silicon cell. This represents a milestone for planar microtracking CPV toward a larger scale, fully integrated panel prototype.
