Contrary to what had happcned during the 17 and !9th centuries, the vvorks by St John of the Cross began to raise great interest during the 19!h century, and not only for its spiritual and religious character, but also as literary works. We may assume that throughout that century they became part of the cannon in Spanish iiterature. My aim in this arricie is to give an account grosso modo of the pathway followed by the Carmeiite mystic through the Spanish literary history of that century.
