Rogelio Salmona existed simultaneously within and outside his time. His work was deeply rooted in history: in the broadest sense of the term. This article intends to understand how the Sociology of Art courses taught by Pierre Francastel in the Sorbonne were fundamental in learning the value of history. It does so through a reading of Francastel’s texts, focusing on the time in which Salmona lived in Paris, some texts from his predecessors Henri Focillon and Lucien Febvre, and from some of the architect’s own writings.
