Background: Giardiasis is an enteroparasitic disease still significant for public health globally, including Latin America (LA). In LA countries, such as Colombia, a high morbidity associated would lead to a considerable cause of disability and economic burden. There is global lack of studies assessing giardiasis costs and disability. Methods & Materials: We calculated incidence rates of giardiasis during 2009-2016 in Colombia using epidemiological data provided by Ministry of Health (Provided Health Services Records) (RIPS), using demographic data from its National Administrative Department of Statistics. The burden of disease was estimated through Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) lost and the costs were estimated based on evidence-based assumptions for acute and chronic phase attention. Results: There were a total of 28,039 cases, with incidence rates ranging from 13.35 to 183.69 cases/100,000 population per departments. A total DALYs of 2.88 to 3.33 lost/100,000 population was estimated, reaching up to 10.4 DALYs/100,000 population. The study period estimated costs were at least of US$ 18.4 million (max. US$ 22.2 million). Conclusion: As in other infectious and parasitic, preventable diseases, this would lead not just to acute, but also chronic disease, causing a significant burden and cost. Although there was a reduction in the disease incidence during the 8-year period (∼50%), the costs did not vary significantly. These findings should lead to the development of evidence-based public health policies, particularly for preventive strategies, considering the avoidable costs that such interventions could save.
