Mudanças na interação tradutor-leitor e intervenção tradutória em retraduções brasileiras de Os Mortos e Arábia(s): apresentação da fala e a valoração em tradução
The purpose of this paper is to investigate shifts in translator-reader interaction and the translator’s intervention in James Joyce’s short stories The dead and Araby, (re)translated by three different translators from English into Brazilian Portuguese. The methodology draws on Rosa’s (2009) and Munday’s (2012, 2015) framework for the analysis of the interpersonal function of language in translated texts, and involves the study of speech presentation and appraisal resources. The investigation is theoretically informed by Narratology, Stylistics, Translation Studies and Appraisal Theory. The texts under scrutiny are part of the RETRAD corpus and the analysis is semi-automatic, making use of computerized annotation of speech presentation and appraisal categories. Preliminary results suggest that intervention in the form of explicitation of narrative voices and of invoked evaluative resources may be related to the dialogic positioning of the translator, coupled with the positionings adopted by target readers as appreciative or not of a fluent reading in the target language. This in turn is also relevant for the study of retranslation.
