SUMMARYPeriodontitis is an infectious disease characterizedby a variety of alterations, affectingtooth supporting tissues. For manyyears, its aetiology has been consideredbasically of bacterial origin. Recent studieshave analyzed the occurrence of herpes virusesin the periodontum and their possibleeffects to cause periodontitis. This casereport provides evidence that link herpesviruses to the development of certain typesof periodontitis.Key words: Herpes viruses, cytomegalovirus,herpes simplex virus, Porphyromonasgingivalis, chronic periodontitis.
