Any manifestation of violence against children and adolescents by parents and caregivers sets up a public health problem that deserves great attention, because of the short and long-term consequences in the lives of those who suffer from it. The objective of this classic theoretical study was to conduct a review of the state-of-the-art about violence against children and adolescents by caregivers, considering physical and emotional maltreatment, as well as disregard. Thirty-five studies on different databases addressing violence against children and adolescents (NNA) exerted by parents and caregivers, their causes, consequences and intervention were consulted. 91.42 % of reviewed articles are published in indexed journals and 48.85% of them were published in the period 2005-2009. Child abuse is a multicausal, multifactorial, multidimensional and high-impact problem both for the victims and for the parents.
