El rol social que cumple quien ejerce la enfermería requiere niveles de profesionalismo de excelencia, ante lo cual el presente trabajo muestra cómo se debe velar por la imagen e identidad de esta disciplina. La metodología utilizada fue la teoría fundamentada, al dar valor a los discursos estudiantiles sobre qué es y qué representa para ellos el profesionalismo, cómo, dónde y para qué se construye, los atributos que lo definen y los insumos requeridos para poderlo desarrollar. En los resultados, los estudiantes identifican los atributos que debe tener todo profesional de enfermería y reconocen que, ante todo, se les exige «ser buenas personas». La tesis que emerge en la investigación es que el profesionalismo es un constructo individual en desarrollo progresivo que requiere de espacios y tiempos, y que demanda para su existencia modelos de rol eficientes, de excelencia y calidad, tanto en la docencia como en la asistencia y en el contexto social. Grounded theory methods were utilized based on student discourses on their own meaning and image of professionalism», how, where and why you need it, the traits which define it, and the skills required to develop it. Results allowed students to identify the attributes all nursing professionals should have, fundamentally, to show you are a «good person who cares». Emerging from this research is the thesis that professionalism is a personal process of continuous improvement in professional practices, which requires spaces and times, and demands efficient role models, in excellence and quality in teaching as well as in patient care and social contexts, in order to exist.
