The article presents some of the results of the research Poetry and Technique, developed in the field of investigations in History and Theory, of the National University of Colombia, in Medellin. It analyzes two exemplary works of modern architecture of Brazil: the Casa Canavelas and the Casa das Canoas, as examples of poetic integration between architecture and environment. These organic designs were developed thanks to the work of multi-disciplinary groups, whose members followed very precise morphological and conceptual guidelines, deriving from the fusion of the teachings of the European modern movement with the understanding of the tropical landscape of Latin America. The research –which at the methodological level was developed by alternating phases of bibliographic studies and field visits to the works, with the purpose of studying the climatic and morphological values from the environment on-site reconstructs some patterns of project layout used in the Casa Canavelas and Casa das Canoas, two works of the 1950s, carried out in peri-urban environments, in direct contact with the lush greenery of the valleys in the vicinity of Rio de Janeiro. In the configuration of these residences, Oscar Niemeyer appears as a coordinator who facilitates the joint work of artists, landscapers and botanists – highlighting Roberto Burle Marx and Alfredo Ceschiatti– for the development of integral designs in harmonious continuity with the natural environment. A methodology of extraordinary currency is applied in these works –in these times of rapid and violent transformations of the territory– which can be reinterpreted in new contemporary architectural designs in rural contexts that are integrated in accurate and respectful way to the natural environment of the tropics.
