Communication is a key variable in school organizations, playing a decisive role in the dissemination of educational innovation processes adopted by the teaching staff and its implementation in schools. In this paper, the factors influencing educational innovation at secondary education and vocational training schools in the Region of Murcia are studied, with particular reference to the management of communication. Public schools affiliated to educational innovation programs offered by the Department of Education in the Region of Murcia during the 2012-2013 academic year were involved in the study. The methodology is based on the analysis of a questionnaire administered to management teams and teachers of a representative sample of schools. Findings expose a teaching innovation model obtained from the teaching conceptions of the variables that contribute most to educational innovation and the involvement of the schools. The article presents the results of a study that analyzes the reasons for participating in teaching innovation projects, the difficulties, the media and communication tools they use, communication barriers and teacher training. The results of this study reveal that communication acts as a determining factor in the implementation and development of the processes of teaching innovation in secondary schools both in a positive sense, as a development, as in a negative sense: the communicational deficit operates as a brake to the implementation of innovation. The conclusion shows that teaching innovation is very positively influenced when the motivation to innovate and the training meet the school needs and stem from its educational program and culture.
