The world outlook is currently shifting toward open innovation systems where different agents of society interact; amongst these are universities which are incorporating project management as a part of the fulfillment of their missionstatement and as a means of promoting the exchange of knowledgeand technology. In order to improve this management, universities need to determine indicators that allow them to gauge their performance in research, extension, and innovation, as well as use them for future decision-making strategies that will increase their competitive advantage in a scenario where knowledge and experience become valuable assets.Nevertheless, finding indicators that are applicable to the institutional context and that measure the true impact of their activities is a task that implies developing a system that shows the flow of knowledgeand the resulting changes. Such indicators must subsist within a context in which their measurement is not limited to data, but is useful for management analysis and the elaboration of new ways of conducting projects. As a result of this descriptive research study, which considers the case of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Medellin campus), the indicators associated to the management of RD&I projects at universities were identified, which should then be formulated and incorporated in a management model of science, technology, and innovation.
