The paratexts to the first editions of Juana Inés de la Cruz’s books lack a historical and literary study and analysis. Furthermore, their reproduction has been deficient because even when Antonio Alatorre collected them in Sor Juana a través de los siglos (1668-1910), he wasn’t thorough. Starting with a comprehensive analysis of the cover page of Juana Inés’s first book, Inundación castálida (1689), this article accounts for the literary and historical universe that appears in the most frequent paratext.
